Statement on the firing of FBI Director James Comey and this new moment of political crisis

LOS ANGELES — John Kim, Executive Director of Advancement Project California, issued the following statement:

“This past week has been a tough one. First was the passage of a massive tax break for the wealthy thinly disguised as health care reform. It is unacceptable for elected officials of any party to endanger the lives of tens of millions of Americans just to score some political points and to enrich their friends.

Soon after came the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Whatever your feelings of Director Comey’s track record at the FBI, the timing of his removal as he was leading an investigation of the President’s campaign connection to Russian interference of the election raises grave concerns. This Administration’s on-going disregard to the fundamental principles of checks and balances tears at the very fabric of our democratic institutions and our democracy itself.”

We demand the United States Congress do the following:
1. Hire a special prosecutor to assert the right of the American people to know the truth
2. Deliver on your campaign promises to provide demonstrably better health care, lower costs and coverage for all
2.1. Stop targeting women, seniors, the disabled, and working class people with proposals that stand to harm their physical health and financial stability
2.2. Treat health care as a bipartisan issue and work across the aisle to fully address the concerns of those who will be impacted most
2.3. Craft a bill that focuses on improving the health of the most vulnerable, rather than redistributing funds to the most wealthy
